Here’s a very interesting Brazilian 960 Reis…….for reasons not involving the undertype!
This is the only TPG certified example of a “25 Tulips” 1826 R. The vast majority of these have 31 tulips, 28s and 30s are less prevalent but not “rare”. There are documented specimens with 29 (Maldonado) that are indeed rare. The 25 tulips variety is documented and catalogued (Bentes 474.25)…….and we’d call it “seldom seen on the market”.
The coin itself is a 100% original skinned specimen struck over a portrait 8 reales with strong eye appeal for a 53. A light scratch on the obverse running just below “960” rightly keeps this one from a higher AU grade. Obviously this is the “Top Pop” as its the only one certified as a 25 tulip variety anywhere.
